A Night on Broadway -- Feb 14 ~ 24
The Star
By Ann Marie Chandy

If you're looking for some opera, songs from musicals and a few laughs, you'll want to check out what Australian quintet Pot-Pourri have to offer in A Night on Broadway, currently being staged at The Actors Studio in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.

The performers - Tania de Jong (soprano), Jon Bode (tenor), Rebecca Bode (soprano) and Jonathan Morton (baritone) - are accomplished singers and perform with ease favourites such as Nessun Dorma, Music of the Night, One Fine Day, The Impossible Dream, You Raise Me Up, Amigos Para Siempre (Friends for Life) and Time to Say Goodbye.

Interspersed with the singing is some light comedy, which doesn't always work. Well, to be fair, one needs a good audience to feed off, and the rather dull crowd last Friday night may have taken Pot-Pourri by surprise (save for three sporting audience members who went onstage and turned out to be a lot funnier than Pot-Pourri themselves!).

Plus, don't be fooled by the promise of magic in the show - there's only one trick and it's more farce than illusion...

There were a couple of striking moments, however. Highlights of the show included pianist Rebecca Chambers's thrilling solo during which she performed excerpts from Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and a medley of other songs. Chambers's spirited performance was a welcome change from all the high C singing, which can get a tad tedious after a while. Tania de Jong's rendition of Teresa Teng's The Moon Represents My Heart also got the audience clapping.
